Tottenham only have themselves to blame over Savinho

It is almost the end of the summer 2026 transfer window, and Tottenham Hotspur still have not signed a single new forward or an attacking player of any kind despite being desperate for upgrades across the front line.

Throughout the entire transfer window, they have been linked to a top transfer target they first wanted literally more than a year ago in Brazliian international Savinho. Spurs have had the whole window to negotiate with Manchester City for the star player, but instead of negotiating his price down, the price has apparently gone up with 85 million pounds the new fee quoted for the player.

There is no world in which Savinho, who barey played in the Premier League last season, is worth 85 million pounds right now. He can be worth 85 million pounds in the future and is not a totally unreasonable player at that fee if Roberto De Zerbi and the club are 100 percent sold on him as a future superstar, but given Spurs have had months to sign him but did not push all that hard to, it is fair to wonder how smitten De Zerbi is with him - and he may even like Cody Gakpo even more.

Tottenham are being forced into a bad deal

Right now, Tottenham Hotspur have nobody to blame but themselves. They went into the summer 2026 transfer window thinking that with Pep Guardiola gone, Manchester City would be more open to selling Savinho, especially after buying Antoine Semenyo last winter and barely playing Savinho in the league games during the 2025/26 campaign.

Now, with Jeremy Doku injured and Man City dragging their feet for literally months, this idea that the Citizens are open to selling Savinho looks like a total myth. And Man City are pumping up the price on Spurs despite Savinho openly wanting to leave because there is no leverage to sell.

Tottenham are at a position with huge needs on the wings and less than two weeks left in the transfer window where they are almost forced to take Savinho's price or end up with nothing. And it's because they have not put any pressure on Manchester City to lower their price with no other alternatives on their radar.

There are literally only two forwards credibly linked to Tottenham this window, Cody Gakpo and Savinho. Victor Osimhen and Nicolas Jackson have been touched on at striker, and Folarin Balogun is another rumored option. But neither have been 100 percent concretely linked to Spurs. And wingers? There is nothing besides Savinho and Gakpo, who are different profiles and seen as players Roberto De Zerbi wants separately. Had Spurs been more proactive with forwards throughout the window, they would not have ended up in this mess where they are almost forced to take a bad deal now.
