The world came to realise that Pedro Porro is actually a half-decent footballer at this summer's World Cup.
Merely representing Tottenham Hotspur is enough for the masses to look upon you unfavourably, especially after last season's wretchedness. Remember the outcry when Djed Spence was named in Thomas Tuchel's England squad? The consternation when Porro was Spain's starting right-back?
The former Sporting CP defender has had his fair share of critics since arriving in N17 midway through the 2022/23 campaign, signed to play wing-back for Antonio Conte. Tim Sherwood was the first mainstream media pundit to stick the boot in, to which Porro responded admirably.
It hasn't been all plain sailing for the 27-year-old in Lilywhite, but Porro was excellent for much of Ange Postecoglou's tenure, proving himself to be an outstanding technician with one of the best passing ranges in the game, certainly among full-backs.
And when Spurs needed him most down the stretch last season, Porro produced a string of sturdy performances to ensure we remained in the top flight. So many questioned the attitude and dedication of a broken squad, but Porro's commitment never wavered. However, we should expect the defender's loyalty to be tested in short order.
Tottenham must expect Pedro Porro transfer interest in 2027
Spurs were mightily fortunate to tie Porro down to a new contract when they did, given his exploits at the World Cup. Luis de la Fuente introduced him to his starting lineup for Spain's second game of the tournament, after they were held by debutants Cape Verde on Matchday 1.
And Porro failed to relinquish his place after impressing in the rout of Saudi Arabia. He was a mainstay throughout the knockouts as Spain claimed a second world title, with his tournament peaking in the semifinals against France. Porro was outstanding against a star-studded attack, capping a stellar evening by scoring La Roja's second with a composed finish.
Thus, Porro's stock had never been higher entering the new season. He was given a hero's welcome back at Hotspur Way, and he'll play a key role in helping Roberto De Zerbi's side surge up the table once he recovers from a hamstring injury. The right-back could be available Monday night against Coventry City.
Porro simply has to be a staple of De Zerbi's project, as his new contract in the summer indicated. However, Spurs' resolve will be tested by La Liga's two behemoths next year, with Graeme Bailey reporting that Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in the Spanish international.
With Barça potentially moving on from Jules Kounde and Trent Alexander-Arnold continuing to underwhelm in the capital, both clubs could be in need of a replacement at the end of the season.
Spurs have plenty of leverage, and have every right to demand a record fee for a right-back next year. Bailey says we value Porro at £75m.
While Porro may be tempted by a return home (let's see how the season pans out!), the Lilywhites shouldn't settle for anything but their valuation.
