Tottenham Hotspur made the decision to sell Djed Spence when he expressed a desire to compete in the Champions League again and fight for a starting spot elsewhere, so they sold him to Inter Milan while upgrading Andy Robertson to become the new No. 2 to injury prone starting left back Destiny Udogie, who unsurprisingly convinced fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi that he is by far the best man for the job.
And Udogie is when he is fully healthy. The problem is that he is rarely at full strength, which has been the case to start the 2026/27 Premier League season. So new signing Robbo has been getting frequent starts, and he has genuinely looked poor. Most of Spurs goals conceded have been due to errors from Robertson, who has looked every bit as washed up and prone to getting gassed at Spurs this season as he did in the last two campaigns with Liverpool.
Meanwhile, before the season started, Tottenham loaned out the promising Souza to FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight. Porto are massive, of course, and sending the top Brazilian prospect at left back to Porto was a big statement. But Souza isn't even playing for Porto to start the campaign, leaving Spurs fans wondering if they made another big loan mistake here by not keeping him around.
Souza looked better than Andy Robertson last season
Souza did play in the first team in the second half of the 2025/26 Premier League season after arriving from Palmeiras as the most hyped young left back prospect in South America. And he looked the part, to the point where comparing his performances last season under Thomas Frank to And Robertson's this season under Roberto De Zerbi actualy makes it evident that the 20 year old Brazilian may already be the better option.
So as Spurs continue to watch Robertson struggle to move the ball forward and even show leadership issues defensively, the Scotland international's crossing accuracy as a positive may not matter so much.
Because if Robbo continues to struggle to keep the goals away and support the left wingers, Tottenham may be forced into acquiring back Souza from loan, and, currently, it's not as if the loan to Porto is helping his development at all.
Souza is someone Tottenham view as a superstar of the future, and the Brazil national team already has him earmarked as a future fixture. His name looks like it's going to be a topic again next winter, one year after joining Spurs instead of Robertson last January.
