Tottenham made their bed in the summer, and they're going to have to lie in until January at the earliest.
While the club embarked on a record-spending splurge and brought in 10 new faces, they also failed to sign a goalscoring forward. Well, Omar Marmoush scored a hatful in a short burst at Eintracht Frankfurt, but the Egyptian's record in Manchester was much more modest.
Much of the summer work was exciting, and Roberto De Zerbi's side have shown despite a winless (and goalless) start to the Premier League season, that they can now 'control' outings, and play matches on their terms. Foundations need to be laid, and there have been enough encouraging signs in possession to suggest that soon, thing will "click".
But the profiles in attack are certainly a concern and a contributing factor to a wasteful opening to the new season. I'm even missing Richarlison's first touch a little bit.
While I do believe that we're poised for an upsurge on the scoring front, right now there's not a single supporter who'd argue that we don't need a goalscorer. We're blessed with a group of sprightly wide players who get bums of seats, but no one we can rely upon to complete the most important action in the sport.
So why are we being linked with another wide player who could get a few more bums of seats?
Sporting CP's Geny Catamo is not the winter signing Spurs require
That's what journalist Ekrem Konur believes anyway. He said on Sportowy.net that Spurs are plotting a winter move for Sporting CP’s Geny Catamo.
Primarily a wing-back when Ruben Amorim was still in Lisbon, Catamo has played further upfield since Amorim's exit and now dons Sporting's No. 10 shirt. The Mozambican international has his merits, attracting the interest of the winger-needy Sunderland in the summer.
A goalscorer, however, he is not.
The 25-year-old has scored 23 times in 144 senior appearances for Sporting. He's never scored more than eight times in a single season or more than six in a league campaign.
Catamo has undoubtedly developed nicely in Portugal, and his physical profile could be useful for another Premier League club. Spurs, though, absolutely don't need this player. He doesn't even prefer to play off the left!
In truth, I think this is all nonsense rumour milling. While Spurs' squad building should come under scrutiny, I don't believe the hierarchy is planning as early as September to sign an unneeded profile at the start of 2027.
