Tottenham Hotspur have bigger needs than the center back position this summer transfer window, but they appear to be loading up on Premier League proven players at the position. Having already signed Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth after a fantastic 2025/26 season for the Cherries, who qualified for European football as underdogs, Spurs are after 50 million pound rated Brighton standout Jan Paul van Hecke.

Spurs have been tracking Van Hecke for a while now, and Roberto De Zerbi seems to really want to reunite with the Dutch international. But even assuming Cristian Romero is leaving, which is almost certainly the case, Tottenham will have a lot of bodies at center back if they sign Van Hecke. They will have Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Senesi, and Ven Hecke as four starting caliber center backs, which leaves no room for teenage sensation Luka Vuskovic.

So it would seem, then, that Spurs are clearly intending on loaning Vuskovic out for another season after an incredible 2025/26 campaign with Hamburg in which he thoroughly outplayed all of the center backs mentioned in this article so far.

A Luka Vuskovic warning

Tottenham Hotspur legend Toby Alderweireld was, of course, better than all these guys, and he offered more wisdom to Spurs fans on Vuskovic's situation that will potentially make Tottenham think twice about their impending loan decision.

Alderweireld told Football.London's Alasdair Gold, "You can loan him again. He's very young, so he has time, but the thing is, you have to have someone next to him who is there all the time and not this guy and this guy. He needs to be together [with a regular partner] because he has to improve, he has to improve by himself, but as well, you're a team. At centre-back, I think Jan [Vertonghen] and me are the best example. We were one team and that's very important. Even, maybe I don't want to talk about it, but the quality of Arsenal at centre-back. Those two, they play together all the time, and they play good together. They know he's doing this and he's doing that. That's the quality of him and the quality of him and they play together. That's something, at Spurs, we need to get as quickly as possible to get a good partnership as centre-backs."

While Alderweireld points out that Vuskovic is young enough that a loan makes sense, he is 100 percent right. And even though he regrets it, using Arenal is a great example. Center backs are best in pairs. Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry. Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng. Hummels and Subotic, even. Maldini and Baresi. Pique and Puyol. And, yes William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Tottenham have time, sure, but imagine if they could get a head start and have Vuskovic and Van de Ven together from Day 1, shining and learning about each other as they become one mind. That is a huge missed opportunity Spurs must ponder if they loan Vuskovic out again.
