Defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha etched his name in the Tottenham Hotspur history books forever with his relegation saving headed goal against Everton on Matchday 38 to send down West Ham United in the process, and the Portugese international proved to be one of the club's biggest heroes in the stretch of the relegation fight.

Palhinha did more than just score that goal against Everton. He delivered an overall midfield monster class, particularly on the defensive end, to shut down shop and get Spurs over the line. Throughout the final weeks of the 2025/26 season, Palhinha was a real asset for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who even told everyone that he 100 percent envisioned the Bayern Munich loanee staying permanently.

Sadly for Palhinha, De Zerbi had a change of heart. Tottenham have since signed younger stars Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a combined 185 million pounds, landing two of the most coveted midfield fish in the entire Premier League this summer to vastly upgrade a subpar midfield.

Joao Palhinha's chapter is over

With that, Tom Barclay of The Sun has confirmed what Tottenham Hotspur fans long suspected after June 30 when the option to buy on his contract expired and his name was taken off the club's official site, along with failed PSG loan signing Randal Kolo Muani. Joao Palhinha will not be back at Tottenham next season, with Barclay stating that he thinks Spurs supporters will always carry fond memories and appreciation for the player after he stepped up in the relegation fight.

There is no doubt that losing Palhinha is bittersweet, and Spurs fans will wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to the next chapter in his solid career as a late blooming defensive midfielder, which will likely wrap up with a return to his home country of Portugal, where giants Sporting CP have been highly interested in a transfer.

The sweet part, at least, is that Tottenham fans will get all those memories of Palhinha stepping up to the plate in the relegation fight, as well as the knowledge that Spurs are goin to be even better in the middle of the park with the Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali signings, which is why Spurs were able to let the former Fulham midfielder walk away without signing him permanently for 25-30 million euros from Bayern Munich. There will be nothing but best wishes for the player going forward.
