On Saturday, AC Milan star left winger Rafael Leao finally stated that he is fed up after another terrible season with the Rossoneri and another season of being scapegoated as the problem on a squad with far worse players than he, so the Tottenham Hotspur dream target announced his intent on departing the club for a new challenge. Immediately, rumors swirled that Leao is likely eyeing an ambitious transfer to the Premier League, specifically the Big Six.

For a couple of years now, fans around the world have expected both Milan to cash in on Leao and for Leao to want out after the discussions around the Portuguese international in Italy became increasingly toxic, with pundits like Antonio Cassano and others bashing the player without much protection from the club, nor were the club's ambitions suiting a superstar who had won the Serie A MVP in 2021/22 to help carry the club back to the heights of the Scudetto.

Tottenham are not serious contenders

Tottenham supporters have been dreaming about Leao at N17 just as much as Arsenal and Chelsea fans, but Spurs insider Paul O Keefe has quickly given the Spurs faithful a gut punch of a reality check. He says that Tottenham fans can "forget him" after pointing out the wages and caliber of player of the elite in Europe are not people Spurs can go after at this time.

Not that Tottenham Hotspur's upper management were ever going to open their pocket books for elite players and compete with the big boys in Europe for someone like Rafael Leao, of course, but since Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League and do not have European football to make things look a little less bad this time around, Leao really has no incentive to join the club like maybe Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus did in 2025.

Arsenal won the Premier League, went to the Champions League Final, and need a left winger almost as badly as Spurs. Their other big London rivals, Chelsea, are also desperate for left wing help and have an owner far more willing to spend, and even though they had a bad season with no European football, they at least came closer in 10th. And then there is always Barcelona, who dwarf these English clubs in prestige and whose president Joan Laporta has always been obsessed with Leao. Tottenham do not stand a chance, and they may not even be on the radar at all.
