Tottenham are said to have held talks with one of the most respected Premier League sporting directors over their vacant role this summer. Spurs still haven't filled the gap left by Fabio Paratici, who bizarrely left the club soon after returning.
Spurs re-employed Paratici after his sporting ban, only to be left at the alter when a job at Fiorentina popped up. Johan Lange has filled the role on a temporary basis, but it seems the search goes on for a new head, with talks reportedly taking place.
Spurs speak to Freedman
According to The Telegraph's Matt Law, Spurs have held conversations with former Crystal Palace and current Al-Diraiyah FC sporting chief Dougie Freedman over their vacancy.
Once manager of the club, Freedman joined Palace in 2017, and while not talked about as one of the heroes of the FA Cup run and subsequent first-ever European qualification, he was key to the mission.
Freedman oversaw countless smart Crystal Palace transfers, including Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Adam Wharton, Daniel Munoz and many more.
Few clubs have recruited and replaced outgoing talent while making a sizable profit than Palace over recent years, and Freedman was at the helm. It's also likely he had a very big say on hiring Oliver Glasner, who is the most successful manager in the club's history in terms of silverware, also winning the Conference League this season.
Freedman put together a masterclass at Palace before leaving following the FA Cup win last season, and it is no surprise to see Tottenham hold what is being reported as 'very serious' conversations with him.
While there may be an argument to say Freedman did well at Palace because he knows the club so well having been there in some capacity on and off for years, it's clear he knows how to operate a Premier League club at sporting level.
If he could manage similar recruitment at Spurs to what he did at Palace, the club bosses would be over the moon, and Tottenham have the added bonus of being able to keep their best players, unlike the Eagles who routinely have to sell to keep ticking over.
There may be fancier names out there, but there are few better options for Spurs than Freedman, who is a proven commodity and a brilliant operator behind the scenes, never seeking the limelight, unlike some who have held the position in the past.
