Lucas Bergvall's 2026 World Cup has been over for several days now, but the most notable moment of the tournament for the 20 year old Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder was nothing he did on the pitch, rather his transfer request behind the scenes.

Although Bergvall continues to maintain that he wants to leave Spurs and did so even before the club officially signed new star midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a whopping 185 million pounds as all but guaranteed starters under Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs have yet to engage in any productive transfer talks.

Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are two notable Premier League clubs intersted in signing Bergvall and could give him an easier road to starting than a Spurs with both Fernandes and Tonali, but Spurs have already rejected a transfer offer from Forest and want a premium fee for a player they still view as a premium player despite a difficult 2025/26 season.

Tottenham believe in Lucas Bergvall

By not engaging with any transfer talks, making any statements, and telling Bergvall that they want to keep him despite his doubling down on a desire to leave, Tottenham Hotspur are turning up the heat, pouring gas, and watching the inferno soar around Bergvall, because everyone is still in the dark on what is happening with the Swedish national team star.

Although the news has been quiet in the mainstream lately, you had better believe that Spurs are pushing hard behind the scenes to convince Bergvall. De Zerbi is a charismatic guy and sold Sandro Tonali on leaving Newcastle United for Spurs instead of Arsenal, Manchester City, or Real Madrid and did the same with Mateus Fernandes with other European giants, and there is no question that he should be able to do the same with Lucas Bergvall, who, with all due respect, does not have the clout of being a proven Premier League starter like the other two.

Tottenham deserve a lot of credit not just for the big new transfers but for not bowing down to Bergvall showing a little unrest. As Jose Mourinho taught everyone, conflict is good, and Roberto De Zerbi seems like a guy who respects and might even rather have a young player upset over minutes than complacently sitting on the bench.

Spurs can't afford to sell another great young gem of the future after already letting Luka Vuskovic go to Brighton. They will let this fire blaze until they are able to get Bergvall to see the light that he has a path to being a star in North London for Spurs; he just needs to wait.
