Tottenham Hotspur surprised a lot of people when the kept Ben Davies around for another year during last summer's transfer window, and there were a lot of Spurs supporters who were critical of the move despite their affinity for Davies. After all, Davies is an aging relic of the past, and while he is versatile, he isn't particularly great at left back or center back at this stage of his career.

Now, Davies did get a couple of games in last season during another injury crisis for Spurs, playing decently well until he himself fell into the injury crisis. The season ending ailment seemed to signal an offiical, sad end to Davies's career at Tottenham.

Well, not so fast. Because according to Tottenham insider Paul O Keefe, via The Spurs Watch, Ben Davies will be quite surprisingly signing yet another short term contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window, too.

Tottenham aren't thinking about Ben Davies as a player

Many Tottenham fans are reacting quite quickly and forcefully to this rather bizarre news, and, once again, the reactions have gone overboard and some are quite disrespectful to Davies as a player and a person.

It is true that Davies is not very useful to Tottenham on the pitch, but perhaps Spurs feel they need the veteran leadership, which was the impetus for siging Andrew Robertson at left back, too. But the Davies move is likely with a longer view towards the future.

During the season when Spurs were looking for a new manager after Igor Tudor and before they were able to convince Roberto De Zerbi to take the job against all odds, Davies was actually being floated near the top of the list of assorted options as a possible manager, functioning as a sort of a player coach after his injury took him out of the equation as a player.

Clearly, Tottenham are grooming Davies to be a future manager or sporting director, and after Toby Alderweireld's comments in the past couple of weeks, Spurs are going to oblige the former star center back by restoring the identity of the club with more former players and key leaders in important positions in the club.

There is nobody with the mentality and stature as a person to suit Tottenham in a coaching or front office role better than Davies. This guy has always bled Lilywhite, and even the most critical people of his play on the pitch cannot deny he is a great character.
