It is never the wish of a true Tottenham Hotspur fan to want to see Arsenal win, but Thomas Frank and the horrendous Spurs board put the club in the incredibly uncomfortable position of needing the Gunners to beat their lesser rivals West Ham United in order to give them a vital boost in the relegation battle. Short of a calamity involving a disgraceful point deduction for both parties, perhaps the ideal emotional result for a Tottenham fan was a draw between West Ham and Arsenal, preceded by a win for Tottenham on Monday Night Football against Leeds United.

But since Tottenham fans have to swallow their pride and put any dreams of a historic bottle job from Arsenal in the Premier League title race on the back burner, the priority is survival and therefore was a West Ham loss at all costs.

Of course, Arsenal didn't make it look any bit easy, but the league leaders were able to get their customary, ugly 1-0 win over an inferior opponent, scraping past the Hammers to ensure Tottenham still have a point advantage over them in the Premier League relegation battle.

Tottenham are so close to safety

So now, Tottenham Hotspur can go four points clear in the relegation fight and just three behind their opponents tomorrow, Leeds, who have, along with Nottingham Forest, wrapped up Premier League safety at this point. And now that West Ham have lost, if Tottenham can keep their winning streak going, they will be on the sweet, sweet precipice of safety themselves.

It is incredible looking back at how things have changed for Tottenham in the past several weeks since the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi over the previous international break. Spurs have gone from the team nobody backed to beat anyone, including the league's worst team Wolves, and on a winless streak of nearly 15 games that was capitalized by a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Now, Tottenham can beat Aston Villa and are backed to win any game against remotely even opposition, Leeds United included. No Spurs fan will be celebrating the win Arsenal had over West Ham, but this three points for the Gunners and zero for the Hammers is a necessary evil that puts Spurs so close to safety, they can taste it. But in the backdrop, it really is a failure of the organization that it had to come to this; Spurs needing help from Arsenal beating West Ham along the way.
