Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has already endeared himself to both the fans and the team in the early going, and the Italian manager has also given a new lease on life to many playerson the team. Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, and Micky van de Ven were among Spurs most frustrating under performers, and they turned into the club's biggest assets down the stretch on the road to survival.

De Zerbi should have a lot of power, based on the deal that Spurs gave to him to convince him to take the job out of desperation in the first place, and a clean slate to build the long term sporting project he wants at a club that really hasn't had a project.

He will have his work cut out for him, though, because even though there is jubilation and positivity at the club after De Zerbi saved Spurs from relegation, they still finished 17th in the Premier League for a second year running.

It's all about the build up for Spurs

Beyond just the personnel, tactically, there is a lot Roberto De Zerbi still has to keep improving at the club, and Spurs supporters will love what he has highlighted as one of the clear top needs the squad must improve upon: the build up phase.

The manager said, via Chris Cowlin, “I want to improve the quality of the play, for sure. I want to improve build-up because normally you are focused on the last 30 metres, but you can improve the last 30 metres if you play better in the first 70 metres. In build-up, we have to improve in the ball possession, we have to improve in the control of the game, for sure in the finishing, the last pass, the assists, a lot of things. We have time now to organise the improvement of the play.”

One of the things that makes De Zerbi such a great coach is his tactical ideas and execution in possession with the complex rotations, patterns of play, and intricate passing to drive the ball forward and find the extra man in possession in revolutionary ways. He was a master mind at Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk before making it to European football with Brighton on the Premier League stage.

He knows Tottenham is his biggest appointment and biggest challenge with the most to gain in terms of legacy. If after nearly a decade, De Zerbi can be the one to bring truly great midfield play to N17, Spurs may finally be on that winning path again.
