Tottenham fans will hate the latest Cristian Romero transfer rumours

Spurs would be less willing to sell their captain to a domestic rival.

There's an acceptance that captain Cristian Romero will leave the club this summer, despite penning a new contract last summer.

Retaining the Argentine off the back of a stellar performance in the Europa League final seemed like a massive coup for Spurs at the start of a new dawn led by Thomas Frank.

Romero, who captained the side in Son Heung-min's absence last term, was trusted with the responsibility full-time after Sonny jetted off to California. However, the defender proved to be anything but the leader the Lilywhites needed.

Bad habits resurfaced, and availability became an issue. After serving multiple suspensions, Romero's season drew to a close prematurely thanks to a knee injury. Many thought then that he'd played his last game for the club, and the fact we stayed up hasn't changed that.

While undoubtedly a superb centre-back when he's fit and focused, it feels like a parting of ways this summer might be best for all parties. Romero can get the move he always wanted, and Spurs can start fresh...

The Argentine, who's conveniently recovered from his knee injury in time for the start of the World Cup, has previously spoken about his desire to play in Spain.

Atlético Madrid were keen last summer, and both Real Madrid and Barcelona have previously been linked.

However, after a poor season, Romero's market has dwindled. Atléti have seemingly got cold feet, Madrid are looking elsewhere, and Barça don't have the cash to chase Romero, all while perfecting their frontline.

The World Cup should do his stock the world of good, given how he typically performs for Argentina. If Spurs are willing to sell, I suspect his market will be strong later this summer.

But there's a club reportedly looking to get ahead of the rest. According to reliable Argentinian journalist Gastón Edul, Manchester United want to sign Romero and are preparing an offer.

Spurs, who have been embroiled in transfer sagas with the Red Devils before, albeit when Daniel Levy was still knocking around, won't want to sell to a Premier League rival. Sure, 14 places separated the two teams last season, but Roberto De Zerbi wants his team competing towards the top of the division again in short order. He'll view United as direct competition.

We can still ask for plenty, and United will have to pay a premium if they want him. Pairing him with Lisandro Martínez makes sense, although I didn't think they'd go big at the centre-back position this summer.
