Tottenham Hotspur are pushing hard to build the midfield for new manager Roberto De Zerbi after securing 60 million euro center back Jan Paul van Hecke as the coach's dream defensive target to complete his new look back line.
As Spurs negotiate with West Ham United for Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali, and now potentially Crystal Palace for Adam Wharton, they are also having to juggle two transfer requests from young stars who simply do not want to compete for starting spots amidst the potential new faces.
Lucas Bergvall from the midfield is the latest, but the first domino to fall was Luka Vuskovic, whose camp is demanding immediate starts at Tottenham or they want to be sold permanently. They do not want a loan deal for another year; they want to start now at Tottenham or go to a club that will, which would, in this case, likely be Brighton with multiple offers on the table from the Seagulls.
Tottenham won't take too kindly to the demands
Appearing on the Last Word on Spurs show, Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridges explained why Vuskovic is all of a sudden demanding a start or a transfer, even though, just a month or so ago, he seemed fine with another loan at Hamburg so he could play with his brother.
Bridges says that Tottenham and Vuskovic were actually totally on the same page, but the turning point came when the Croatian international played so well for Hamburg that he made it to the Bundesliga Team of the Season. Looking at that, Vuskovic now thinks that he deserves to start in the first team for Tottenham Hotspur.
Now, it is not such an outrageous declaration, because many Spurs supporters would have agreed with him, and he was playing amazing. The problem is that Vuskovic would still have to fight for a starting spot, as Spurs cannot hand a starting job to a young player who is not proven in the Premier League.
As good as Vuskovic was, he still has some red flags. He can be slow in transition and is not an agile player, so the Premier League could expose him in ways that the Hamburg system and back three were able to hide him.
Also, top clubs like Tottenham should not hand starting jobs to people until the fight for it. Luka Vuskovic seems to think that one great season at Hamburg merits an immediate start at Spurs, and it looks like the first sign of fame, getting awards in the Bundesliga, got to his head, and now he thinks he can bully his parent club into paying him or doing what he wants at his whim. Yet Vuskovic cannot even guarantee starts or convince for the national team against his future Premier League opponents on the England national team.
