Tottenham fans still have no clarity on who their next manager is going to be next season, as Daniel Levy has remained frustratingly tight-lipped on the subject of Ange Postecoglou's future, possibly because of uncertainty around the team's overall future at a management level.
With Levy as chairman, Tottenham have earned a reputation for being a, well, stingy club, and rumors that they will be sellers before buying this summer despite qualifying for the Champions League as the 17th-best team in the Premier League haven't exactly done anything to dispel that rep.
And if Levy and Spurs are stingy as their reputation indicates, then the latest information about Postecoglou's situation only favors Tottenham keeping Big Ange around for one more year.
Firing Ange Postecoglou will cost Tottenham financially
According to a report from the Telegraph's Matt Law, if Tottenham were to fire Postecoglou, they would have to compensate him four million pounds in penalties for the early termination. That's a massive expenditure for Spurs, especially since, as Law notes, Spurs are already on the hook for a two million pound bonus to Big Ange for winning the Europa League title.
Obviously, two million pounds is a mere drop in the bucket to how much a Europa League title - and the Champions League qualification it brings - is worth, and it's just compensation to Postecoglou for his efforts in bringing that title back home after 41 years. However, four million pounds for Postecoglou to exit, while not worse than some of the figures we've seen for other managers, it's still a hefty price for Tottenham to pay.
And if Tottenham aren't all that convinced by the other manager candidates and feel that they aren't substantially better than Postecoglou, then it isn't worth the four million pounds - and potentially the future of star center back Cristian Romero - of the cost to fire him.
As Postecoglou continues to be backed by the dressing room and as Tottenham fans continue to reflect on the feeling of winning a major title, Postecoglou, despite some transfer rumblings, seems to be safe than he was a few weeks ago.
Levy could always change that, and Tottenham fans have no idea what is going on in the background of their club with so many new and conflicting stories. But if Levy needed a small reason to nudge him in either direction of this decision, then perhaps the four million pound fee is that subtle factor.
