Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi is famous for his ambition and his desire to win at all costs, and he has brought in three big names in the Premier League this summer in Jan Paul van Hecke at center back, Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park, and Mateus Fernandes alongside Tonali in the defensive midfield. All three additions cost Spurs nearly 250 million pounds in total, as the club are intent on returning to the Champions League despite being one game away from relegation in the 2025/26 Premier League season.
There is understandably a lot of hype for Tonali and Fernandes and what they can bring to the table as a duo at N17, but they are not the only partnership with a shot at becoming the best in the league under De Zerbi.
It may not seem like it, but the duo of Micky van de Ven and Van Hecke is now in the spotlight and are a sleeper tandem to become the best in the league, yes, even above the center back pairing Arsenal have, especially with William Saliba injured and Gabriel Magalhaes's antics starting to get exposed by much better players like Erling Haaland.
Jan Paul van Hecke and Micky van de Ven are the truth
Van de Ven and Van Hecke are both young and insanely talented footballers who just need the right coaching, and De Zerbi has already shown that he can unlock elite play out of these two. And they are warriors who will buy in to the team and be less inconsistent than Cristian Romero. Plus, Spurs do not have to run them into the ground either with Marcos Senesi and Kevin Danso behind them.
But beyond athleticism, ball playing ability, and all the great individual qualities Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke have, everyone knows that what takes a defense to another level is chemistry. And these two Dutch national teammates have chemistry in spades.
Van Hecke recently spoke about how great of a relationship he has with Van de Ven, via Hotspur Lane, “4-5 years ago we played together many times with the U21’s with Holland, so that’s where we started to know each other. We always said to each other ‘we need to play in the same team’ as a joke, and now it’s finally happened."
Now that is incredible, and the more these two play and talk about Tottenham Hotspur, the better and better the decision Roberto De Zerbi made to sign Van Hecke looks. With their qualities and chemistry, these two are real sleepers to take the Premier League by storm in 2026/27.
