Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi already showed the Spurs faithful that he can be the right man for the job, rescuing the Lilywhites from relegation, turning around the club's fortunes almost immediately after arriving despite inheriting a downtrodden and flawed squad.
For Spurs fans, if De Zerbi could make Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, and Joao Palhinha a mean Premier League midfield trio, then they can only imagine what he is able to do with profiles who actually suit his style of football and are the caliber of player that should be at a Premier League Big Six club.
Although Tottenham have even bigger needs on an attack whose only goal scoring threat last season was the mediocre Richarlison, Spurs do need to sign needle moving midfield talent for De Zerbi in order to set the former Brighton and Marseille manager up for success.
Tottenham want to sign a top midfielder
According to Spurs insider @szyexcl, internally, the aim from the Tottenham front office this summer transfer window is to bring in a "big midfielder".
That is exactly what every Tottenham Hotspur fan wants to see. Now, Spurs did land a tremendous midfield player in Xavi Simons, and he looked like one of the best player in the Premier League in the few opportunities he got to shine under Roberto De Zerbi. And prior to his ACL tear, he and RDZ were absolutely clicking.
Simons is the caliber of midfielder Tottenham fans want to see brought in. Spurs only other midfield acquisitions in the last two transfer windows were the overpaid Conor Gallagher and the fairly average Joao Palhinha. Gallagher wasn't half bad for De Zerbi and Palhinha was colossal in the Premier League relegation battle, but nobody would call these guys remotely world class, nor are they starters for a team that wants to get back in the top five of the English Premiership in 2027.
So Spurs do need a big player who can elevate the team, and after Xavi Simons tore his ACL, they can't necessarily rely on the Dutchman to do it for a significant portion of the 2026/27 season, which only necessitates a big splash in the middle of the park even more.
There aren't a whole lot of those kinds of names available on the transfer market, as the biggest midfielders like Rodri and Enzo Fernandez are not at all on the table for a move from their Premier League sides to the 17th placed team in the league when Real Madrid are linked. Spurs have their work cut out for them.
