Tottenham Hotspur star center back Luka Vuskovic is not yet guaranteed to be back at the club for the 2026/27 season with teams like Barcelona interested in his services, but with the Croatian international safely under contract, Spurs are the only ones who could potentially screw up the chane to have a generational center back prospect in their starting lineup next season.

Vuskovic had such an insane season as a first team senior player on loan in the Bundesliga that not only was he beloved by Hamburg supporters, but he was also the clear consensus best center back in the Bundesliga and arguably the best in European football as a whole. And besides Harry Kane and Michael Olise, he was the best player in the entire league.

All of that hype is enormous, and there is no doubt that Vuskovic can do a lot of things at a high level already. He is the best in the world in aerial duels right now, he is great on the ball as a passer, even Lothar Matthaus says he is wise beyond his years in understanding the game, he is consistent, he has young leadership qualities, and he even scores great goals with technical ability.

Even Luka Vuskovic is not perfect

Although there is a lot that gets overstated about the quality of the Bundesliga and the transition to the Premier League, it is true that transitioning to a new league is tough, especially for a young player. Luka Vuskovic is not the fastest center back, and while that would actually get exposed more in the expansive Bundesliga compared to the physical Premier League, the stylistic difference between Hamburg and Tottenham Hotspur is worth noting.

At Tottenham, Vuskovic will have to be in more transitions than at Hamburg, he will sit back less, and he will face better forwards at Big Six clubs. There will be a learning curve, and even though Vuskovic is ready mentally and physically to start for Tottenham after being amazing for, quite frankly, a better team last season at Hamburg, the expectations will still be higher for Spurs in 2026/27 than they were for Hamburg.

Tottenham fans have to be careful with Vuskovic. They need to nurture him and praise him, because he merits the highest of praise. At the same time, if he struggles or shows cracks that were not seen at Hamburg, that is not a reason to criticize, give up, or say he was overhyped. Those are going to anticipated, and as long as Spurs and the fans anticipate them now, Vuskovic will be fine.
