Tottenham Hotspur are going to be sellers in the summer transfer window this year. Although they still have a copious number of needs that were not adequately addressed in the previous summer window or even attempted to be addressed in the winter stanza, their status as relegation dwellers means that even if they survive the drop, they will not have European football to bail them out this time and could still face a mass exodus.
And in all honesty, there are many Tottenham fans who will not be upset with seeing the backs of several of these underperforming big name players Perhaps the most disappointing of the stars in the squad is center back Micky van de Ven, whose own links to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona have subtly cooled in this Premier League relegation fight.
Van de Ven was honestly not very good last season either with 0.5 dribbles completed allowed to just 0.8 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game. His overall play was overvalued by a few big performances against underwhelming teams in the Europa League, because, in the Premier League, he made very few defensive interventions and was easy to beat one on one, overrated by a focus on athleticism rather than his actual defensive qualities.
Micky van de Ven has been a liability
Those defensive skills have been exposed badly this season, and at a time when Tottenham Hotspur have wanted to see more from him in the thick of the relegation fight, he continues to struggle. He has not played well in months, and in every single game of this winless streak, the Dutchman has been a disappointment with basic positional errors, a real lack of effort and intensity, and some horrendously rash challenges that have cost Spurs results.
Micky Van de Ven is still under 25 years old and can get better. But he is also one of the few sellable assets Tottenham have this summer to recoup their funds without European football - and potentially without any Premier League revenue for a full season.
And Van de Ven isn't going to help Spurs return to Europe - or be the difference that makes or breaks a return to the Premier League. If anything, these last few weeks have highlighted just how much he is part of the problem for Spurs, and fans are beyond the point of ignoring the fact that in this relegation fight, the true nature of these players has been exposed. And Van de Ven isn't someone with the quality or the fight to stay; he is more valuable to Spurs if sold.
