Tottenham Hotspur knew 100 percent that they would be selling Cristian Romero before the summer transfer window even started, and whlie it took them some time to close a deal and they had to settle for less than they thought, Roberto De Zerbi had zero hesitation when it came to selling the Argentina World Cup standout permanently to Atletico Madrid, who had long been rumored to want the Spurs central defender.
There is a media narrative that is already setting in again to start the 2026/27 Premier League season after two terrible losses to Brentford and Newcastle United that Spurs are going to be weaker this season without Romero.
Although Romero was the club's captain last season and is still seen by many as one of the best center backs in the world, there is no question in the minds of Spurs fans that the team were not any better with Romero on the pitch than they were without him. And it is not lost on many fans that Tottenham survived the Premier League relegation battle despite Romero's injury, while a healthy Romero did not help them as they slid downward nearly into the full on abyss of relegation.
Cristian Romero does not weaken Tottenham
Cristian Romero is a great player who, in theory, would be a perfect fit for how Roberto De Zerbi likes to play with an emphasis on aggression and ball playing. And Romero is a proven winner at the Europa League and international evel with a World Cup and multiple Copa Americas in his trophy case.
And that all plays into the narrative that Premier League pundits were already starting at the time the transfer rumors of Romero to either Inter Milan or Atletico Madrid began to heat up in the summer. It is one, though, that Tottenham Hotspur fans should not be buying, even as the new look center back trio of Micky van de Ven, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Marcos Senesi has shown some growing pains.
Tottenham will not win or lose this season by the sword of Romero's departure, because, factually speaking, Tottenham were terrible last season with Romero on the pitch. The idea that losing Romero weakens Spurs in any way is overlooking how many games Tottenham lost at the highest level because of Romero's attitude and mental lapses.
On his day, he was a world class player for Spurs. But those days were too few and far between, especially last season. Spurs need consistency and players who believe in the team even when there are low points.
