It has been more than a year now since Tottenham Hotspur supporters have last seen star right winger and midfielder Dejan Kulusevski on the pitch, and from what initially looked like it would be a minor knee injury has turned into an indefinite absence that has continued to cause major concern around the fan base.
With each passing month that Kulusevski has missed with not even a smidgen of a time table for a return, Tottenham fans have become increasingly worried that they may never see Kulu in a Spurs shirt - or even on the pitch at all.
Kulusevski will not be at the 2026 World Cup for Sweden, which was an obvious outcome new manager Roberto De Zerbi had already warned everyone about, and though he is aiming to return for the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season with Spurs, even the Lilywhite faithful don't seem to have much faith that this will be the case.
Dejan Kulusevski has a rough injury
Finally, someone close to the situation is speaking in somewhat less opaque terms about Kulusevski's knee injury. A Swedish national team doctor told Swedish outlet Aftonbladet that Kulu's injury to his knee is a cartilage based injury and is thus difficult to treat, reminding fans that cartilage does not have its own blood supply and cannot heal in the usual way.
The doctor said of Kulusevski, "They are difficult to treat. Cartilage has no blood supply and no nerves. They do not heal in the usual way. He won't give up hope. He's getting plenty of help from the club and others who are helping him with his rehabilitation. I have good hopes that he will play football again."
While the doctor is actually speaking in positive terms by stating that Dejan Kulusevski is not giving up hope on recovering and that he has "good hopes" Kulu will be able to play again, none of what he is saying will make Spurs supporters feel any less frightened about the star winger.
Because if we are speaking in terms of Kulusevski being able to play football again, then the conversation is not about Kulu's return next season or his ability to be a top level footballer for a big club like Tottenham Hotspur. The conversation is about Kulusevski getting back on the pitch at all in any shape or form and at any time in the future.
So there remains no time table for Kulu's return, and the worst fears Tottenham fans had about Kulu's career being threatened by this knee injury were actually right all along. And it's long past time someone at Tottenham itself gave the world an actual update.
