Tottenham Hotspur supporters were already souring a bit on Cristian Romero, as questions were raised throughout the 2025/26 Premier League season about his leadership and fitness for the captaincy as the man taking over from the beloved Son Heung-min. But because of his quality and his wililngness to openly criticize Spurs horrible front office, most fans were rallying behidn the star center back, even as his performance were not world class and his effort seemed to suffer greatly even during the worst of the Premier League relegation battle.
But now, anyone who had defended Romero against the valid internal criticisms before reached their breaking point after learning that the captain of Tottenham would not be with his teammates for the biggest game in the club's history with Premier League survival still on the line on Matchday 38 against Everton on Sunday - the final game of the season with Spurs still needing a point to secure their survival.
Club legends like Glenn Hoddle and Teddy Sheringham have come out publicly to blast captain Romero, while even manager Roberto De Zerbi did not seem to mince words and made it clear that Romero is not acting at all like a leader, whereas someone like Ben Davies is, and that the fans are 100 percent correct for their response to Romero.
Tottenham fans are not buying it
Although Cristian Romero himself has not commented publicly, he left his agent Ciro Palermo to do that, and, well, Tottenham Hotspur supporters are not at all impressed with the public statement.
He said of his client Romero, via Alasdair Gold of Football.London, “Any suggestion that the trip was made for the purpose of attending football matches is entirely inaccurate. More than that, it is a completely fabricated narrative being circulated by people who are unaware of the facts and have no knowledge of the rehabilitation plan that has been in place for weeks. Cristian's focus is, and has always been, on recovering as strongly as possible, preparing for the World Cup, and supporting Tottenham Hotspur in every way he can. His commitment to the club, his team-mates and the supporters has been evident throughout his time at Tottenham and remains unchanged.”
The thing is, it was reported not but a week ago that Romero was bringing in a member of the Argentina national team's medical staff with him to North London to continue his rehab around the club so he could be with his teammates during the relegation fight. And he was roundly praised for that. So then why go back to Argentina and watch a random match between his childhood club and River Plate when he could stay in North London, continue to rehab, watch this game with his teammates with Tottenham's season on the line against Everton, and then go back to Argentina to prepare for the World Cup afterwards?
The timeline of what he is doing is not congruent with what Romero's agent is saying, and it doesn not explain why Romero picked now, of all times, and Sunday, of all days, to leave the club. The weight of the manager and Tottenham legends speaking out against Romero is heavier, and Spurs supporters are not going to be convinced by the mixed messages of an agent statement where he waffles about the commitment between Argentina and Tottenham. Spurs fans were not asking Romero to pick against Argentina; they are just wondering why the captain is abandoning the club to watch another game when he could have left for Argentina literally any other day.
