Tottenham Hotspur were alarmingly poor in the attack again this weekend in the Premier League, as they stumbled to an unprecedented fourth straight game without a goal to start the 2026/27 campaign. Although Roberto De Zerbi has Spurs already defending so much better than they were last season and controlling games from midfield with his newest stars and an improved Rodrigo Bentancur, the Lilywhites still can't buy a goal despite the blockbuster Manchester City signings Omar Marmoush and Savio.
The latter was actually the lone bright spot in this latest 0-0 draw with Everton. Savio had four key passes and four dribbles completed to clearly lead Spurs in both categories, and whlie he totally lacked goal threat, like the others, at least he was creating chances and making things happen, especially when literally nobody else was.
Savio started on the right wing with Mohammed Kudus still working his way back to fitness, but Tottenham Hotspur fans are worried that this is the only place he will play. De Zerbi wants goals, and while that is understandable, in doing so, he may decide that he only wants inverted wingers in his system, which means Savio and Kudus would be competing for minutes on the right wing with Kudus then also competing with a lot of players for minutes at the No. 10, including James Maddison and even potentially Omar Marmoush himself.
Tottenham don't have much attacking depth
Meanwhile, Tottenham would then have Marmoush as the inverted left winger, Mathys Tel and Mykhaylo Mudryk as his backups, and then Dominic Solanke at striker. But since Solanke has been playing so badly, the only other center forward options are Marmoush or Tel - as Richarlison has been banished and literally not even registered in the squad - which means Tel could be starting on the left wing again with Marmoush in the middle.
There is no doub that right now, to start the season, Savio has been the best attacker. He created two goals from nothing off the bench in his debut in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic, and he has been the one player to do anything useful in the Premier League attack this season.
Savio has to play, whether it is the left or the right side. Roberto De Zerbi only viewing Savio as an inverted option on the right wing would be a mistake, because even though Savio can't score much on the left wing as a traditional wide man, his creation and ability to draw out defenders can open up the space for the others to score more themselves.
