Week after week, Rodrigo Bentancur's stock at Tottenham Hotspur grows, and, once again, he delivered a fine performance at the base of the midfield alongside Sandro Tonali as Spurs shut down shop against Everton. They were unable to get the win because they were not able to score a single goal again, but Bentancur was not at fault at all for that. And of the midfielders, Benta has actually been the best one, even over Tonali, at progressing the ball and driving it forward into attacking zones.
After watching Bentancur fall behind Archie Gray in the pecking order last season and then see his campaign derailed by a hamstring tear, Spurs fans did not think they would ever again talk about Bentancur being one of the best center midfielders in the Premier League.
But not only is the Uruguayan international playing so well for Spurs right now that he is in his pre injury form before that devastating ACL tear, but he is playing even better than he did when he was a younggster at Juventus and regarded as one of the best up and coming midfielders in world football.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for big bucks, and yet Rodrigo Bentancur has been outplaying both of them. He has been blanketing teams with interceptions, clearances, and elite defensive positioning to the point where Spurs are not missing Joao Palhinha as badly as they may have thought, while his passing on the ball has been essential to Spurs producing back to back clean sheets now against Nottingham Forest and Everton.
Bentancur is getting some Spurs fans to whisper about him playing at a world class level as of late, and while that seems like an egregiously strong claim to make, Bentancur looks so tidy in and out of posession and is elevating Spurs to such a degree that he is blowing away fans that much.
Juxtaposing how poorly Bentancur started the 2025/26 season under Thomas Frank and how brilliantly he has played under Roberto De Zerbi both at the end of the 2025/26 campaign when they survived relegation is such a massive contrast. Bentancur is playing with much more confidence now and no longer playing like a coward, which was the case under Frank, but he even looks more spry, hence why Tottenham fans are seeing the pre injury version of Benta in thier minds when they watch him play now in 2026.
