Tottenham Hotspur are actively pursuing two of the biggest names in the midfield transfer market in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, with Roberto De Zerbi badly wanting both on a Spurs side that has struggled to control games and progress the ball to the forwards over the past few seasons.

In doing so, though, Spurs will likely lose Lucas Bergvall as a consequence. The 20 year old did not play as much as he would have liked and was also misused by former manager Thomas Frank, and given De Zerbi leaned on the veterans more in the Premier League relegation battle, Bergvall feels as though he will not get enough minutes with Spurs next season.

And now with Fernandes and Tonali squarely on the transfer radar, the Swedish international took it upon himself to submit a transfer request behind closed doors while at the 2026 World Cup. There are clubs around the Premier League linked, but both the most prominent and most concerning happens to be Nottingham Forest, with whom Spurs have a lot of bad blood after the Morgan Gibbs-White transfer collapsed.

Nottingham Forest are looking beyond Lucas Bergvall

The pipe dream swap of Bergvall for Gibbs-White is highly unlikely, so there is no real silver lining to Bergvall joining Forest, who really want a new No. 8 after selling breakout star Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for well over 100 million pounds.

But the good news for Spurs is that Lucas Bergvall is not the only one on Nottingham Forest's transfer radar, as Forest are also highly interested in a Liverpool center midfielder Spurs were once very interested in a few months ago, Curtis Jones.

According to a report from transfer insider Ben Jacobs, Jones is a target for Forest. Inter Milan have been trying to sign him this summer but have only offered 21.5 million pounds, whereas Liverpool want 40 million pounds for one of their key rotational midfielders. Jacobs says it is uncertain if Forest will bid that much for Jones and that Liverpool are more than prepared to keep the 25 year old if no satisfactory offer comes their way.

Tottenham Hotspur fans have to see the Curtis Jones interest as their big hope for Nottingham Forest to avoid signing Lucas Bergvall. A loan would be the ideal situation so Spurs do not lose one of their top midfield talents, but if they were forced to sell, then selling him to a club similar in the Premire League table like Forest with a bad club to club relationship is the last thing they would want. Spurs fans will smile and hope that Jones being on the same plain as Bergvall for Forest will yield a different transfer outcome.
