The appointment of Thomas Frank will go down in history as not just the worst hiring in the history of Tottenham Hotspur but also one of the worst managerial appointments in Premier League history. Frank arrived as a hyped up manager from Brentford, though he was quickly exposed as being clueless and probably fed the exact players and plans from the Brentford hierarchy that he needed to succeed there.
Because he had no clue, no adjustments, no game plan, and no identity as he displayed the most cowardly football Spurs had ever seen and led them to their worst season in history despite an offseason of investment that included Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus. Had it not been for Roberto De Zerbi's last minute appointment, Spurs would have been relegated.
Since Frank's departure, former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has another marquee position after being hired by Al Nassr to manage legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kingsley Coman, and Sadio Mane, whlie Frank remains on the unemployment line.
Tottenham are waiting for Chelsea to mess it all up again
But bafflingly, that may not be for long. According to a surprise report from Sacha Tavolieri of Sky Sports Switzerland, Strasbourg in Ligue 1, the partner club of Chelsea, have made contact with Thomas Frank and are interested in hiring him as their next manager. He is reportedly their Plan A at manager and would like to have a big say in recruitment and in his assistants at the club.
Strasbourg is a very high profile coaching job, because it is seen as a stepping stone to managing Chelsea after Liam Rosenior took the Blues job from Enzo Maresca following a positive spell in the French league. Rosenior was badly exposed, of course, but the fact that Chelsea hired him in the first place is huge for Frank. And judging by their coaching decisions over the years, if Frank gets the Strasbourg job, he has a great chance of managing Chelsea because 1) they will hire just about anyone and 2) they cycle through managers quickly.
Chelsea made a marquee appointment this summer in former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who was favored by Tottenham Hotspur fans. However, Alonso only lasted a couple of months in Madrid after rubbing the players the wrong way, making terrible personnel decisions that alienated the front office, and playing the worst football Real Madrid have seen since the 2018/19 season.
All of that is to say, if Frank goes to Strasbourg, there's a real chance Xabi Alonso is the latest Chelsea manager to get canned when things eventually fall apart for this team without European football, and then Tottenham fans could be laughing all the way to the bank if Frank gets the Strasbourg job and then the Chelsea call up. Imagine the scenes.
