Tottenham Hotspur currently have four left backs in their squad right now. Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Djed Spence, and the young prospect Souza are all capable of getting minutes at the position, and there is a potential logjam now that Robertson has signed on as a free agent. And even if we assume Souza is headed out on loan in 2026/27 a la Luka Vuskovic and Mikey Moore last season, that still leaves three players for one spot.

Robertson isn't a ready made starter at this stage of his career, and while Djed Spence is shining for Thomas Tuchel and the England national team, the versatile fullback is still seen as more of a backup option than a starter at N17.

Still, because of Destiny Udogie's horrible injury record last season, there has been speculation that the Italian international could be the odd man out despite being by far the best left back when everyone is healthy. And even though he did have some good performances last season, Udogie faltered when Spurs were at their worst and needed him the most, again, causing many fans to call his future into question just as they have with the likes of Cristian Romero.

Destiny Udogie is generating transfer interest

Hoewver, according to a report from top Italian transfer insider Alfredo Pedulla, Tottenham Hotspur do not appear to be wavering on Destiny Udogie when push comes to shove. Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange have reportedly fielded some top offers for the Italian fullback, but Spurs have thus far rejected all offers for the 23 year old.

Yes Udogie, despite having years of top level experience between Serie A for Udinese and the Premier League for Tottenham, is still not even close to 25 years of age yet. He is one of the best young left backs in the world, and the lone blemish on him really is that injury record, which is truly what begets the inconsistency that can appaer on the pitch.

Tottenham rejecting the transfer offers for Udogie is a clear sign that Roberto De Zerbi, who has the full strength of power over the squad, values the Italian and wants to see what he can do in the system. Udogie is by far the most skilled technical player and best forward progressor of the ball at left back. Souza is too young for that responsibility, and those are not the strengths of Andy Robertson and Djed Spence. Udogie is here to stay unless he proves otherwise during the season.
