Mathys Tel spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and immediatley fell in love with the magic of the club, helping the Lilywhites win a European trophy for the first time in more than 40 years.
Tottenham then purchased him permanently that summer from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for 40 million euros, which was actually a bargain deal from the 60 million euro option to buy that Spurs would have otherwise had to spend.
Then, they signed another player on loan from Bayern Munich in defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha, bringing him on board to solidify the defense in the midfield. And he has a 25 million euro option to buy clause in his loan deal that can rise up to 30 million euros with potential add ons.
Joao Palhinha's future is not settled
Well, Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg reports that Tottenham Hotspur are trying to take the same strategy that they did with Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich last summer transfer window by attempting to negotiate Palhinha's price down further. They want to pay less than potentially 30 million euros in order to feel better about keeping the player.
Joao Palhinha, per Plettenberg, wants to decide his future soon, and he has two attractive options. Like Tel, Palhinha has fallen in love with the spirit of Spurs, playing a crucial role in saving Tottenham from Premier League relegation, even scoring the winning goal in a monster class on Matchday 38 vs. Everton to punch Spurs top flight ticket.
But in addition to Tottenham, Palhinha has to contemplate interest from his home country of Portugal, as Sporting CP are a huge club in the nation and have the benefit of actually playing European football next season. There is also less pressure for Palhinha to perform.
Tottenham have an option to buy already negotiated with Bayern Munich, so if they are willing to pay 25-30 million euros for the Portuguese international, then Palhinha is their player. They have the right of first refusal. But if Spurs do not want to pay that much, then that right goes away, and all of a sudden they are at the mercy of Palhinha wanting Tottenham badly over Sporting or Sporting being unwilling to pay more than Spurs are. So the situation with Palhinha is far from over, though many Spurs fans would argue that Palhinha should be signed for less than 30 million euros anyway.
