Tottenham Hotspur made waves this week by reaching an agreement with the rivals they relegated last season, West Ham United, to sign their biggest gem away from them again this offseason, agreeing to an 85 million pound transfer for defensive midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Linked strongly to Manchester United and even Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid, Fernandes has been one of the two big obsessions for manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has been begging for a midfield overhaul. He had been pushing just as hard for the 21 year old Portuguese international behind the scenes as he was for Tonali, and Spurs were able to secure his signing first with Man United and even Madrid unwilling to meet the asking price West Ham had set.
Once Tottenham are able to secure Sandro Tonali along with the young West Ham midfielder, Spurs will most likely turn their attention to the attack where Marcus Rashford and Savinho are the main two names linked - but most expect Spurs to be just as keen on a striker as they are on a new starting left winger so the can finally replace both legends Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.
Tottenham need new attackers
According to a new report from Paul Hirst and Tom Allnutt of The Times, after securing the bit of Mateus Fernandes business, Spurs want to turn their attention and make two attacking signings. And of those two attacking additions, Tottenham Hotspur are planning on one of them being a new left winger.
Tottenham fans have been begging Spurs since last season to make these attacking changes. Aside from inking Mathsy Tel to a permanent deal, Spurs literally signed no left wingers or strikers. They added Randal Kolo Muani on loan on deadline day, but he turned out to be a historically terrible transfer and is heading back to the one club ridiculous enough to pay for him, Juventus.
Spurs missed out on - or did not even try to sign - the other left wing targets, and their decision to stay put with Richarlison and Dominic Solanke at striker backfired. They are going to have to find new solutions to actually score goals, as Richy was the lone remotely useful goal scorer in the Premier League last season - and nobody would call him an above average striker at this stage.
Fans really need Spurs to get serious about adding multiple attackers who can move the needle. Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert alone on the left are clearly insufficient, and if Spurs do not add a new striker as well, De Zerbi may have made his big splashes in defense and midfield for naught.
