Tottenham Hotspur are going hard after Cody Gakpo, but Liverpool, even after securing Bradley Barcola, are still making it difficult for Spurs to sign the Dutch international since they want a second winger to sign before they feel comfortable selling the World Cup standout.
Roberto De Zerbi has been as high on Gakpo as Savio or Omar Marmoush, who both just joined Spurs from Manchester City in the last week or so, and he has been desiring the Liverpool star as a potential solution on the left wing or even at center forward.
Well, the left wing will be filled up by Savio for now, but after his late injury blow, Tottenham were forced to start Mathys Tel again. And despite an excellent preseason in which the Frenchman was legitimately Spurs best player in the friendly matches, Tel was abhorrent and really showed his level in a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.
Tottenham are falling behind Manchester City
That performance from Tel was a clear sign that Tottenham Hotspur need to go as hard after Cody Gakpo as ever, but, problematically, it isn't just Liverpool and their reluctance to sell that they have to be worried about.
Manchester City have been very interested in Gakpo lately, and like Spurs, they see the goal scoring forward as their Plan A at the left wing position and Everton star Iliman Ndiaye as the Plan B. So if Man City sign Gakpo, then Ndiaye ends up being the main get for Tottenham.
According to a new report from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are only stepping up their efforts to sign Gakpo right now, and they are advancing in negotiations. Gakpo is their favorite option, as Romano confirms, though he maintains that Liverpool are still only going to sell with another signing.
Man City stepping up their interest in Gakpo is definitely terrible news for Tottenham, and they might be seeing an opening after watching how poor Spurs were against Newcastle. They have embarrassed themselves in two straight Premier League matches to start the season, getting shut out with no goals, and not even Omar Marmoush having a strong debut on Matchday 2, even starting the match, could save Spurs vs. Newcastle.
Enzo Maresca has to be showing this tape as an example to Gakpo of which club is better, pointing out that, like Marmoush and Savio, you may play more at Spurs, but you are only going to be able to crush the competition in the Championship. Spurs need Gakpo badly, but they are sending the wrong message to the star about his prospects at N17.
