Tottenham Hotspur are cleaning house in the Premier League this summer transfer window, and they have put the same clubs on notice that used to run circles around them in the transfer market. For example, last year, they could not even sniff Thomas Frank's best player Bryan Mbeumo, who went to Manchester United without so much as a fight.
Now, they easily beat out the Red Devils for Mateus Fernandes despite finishing more than 10 spots lower in the table. Last year, Arsenal stole Eberechi Eze and Christian Norgaard from under Spurs noses. This year, Spurs almost got relegated and Arsenal finally won the league, but Tottenham still signed Sandro Tonali over the Gunners.
Although Spurs have done an amazing job of bringing in talent to fix up the defense and midfield, the most difficult need to address remains. Spurs need to sign attacking talent this summer window to upgrade a side that only had one double digit goal scorer in the underwhelming Richarlison. And since every top club in England knows Spurs mean business this summer, they are going to have to fight even harder for their guys.
Son Heung-min has not been close to replaced
Based on the players Tottenham Hotspur are being linked to lately, it appears their No. 1 focus is to add goals and assists. And they want to add them on the left wing, too. Savinho is a more explosive, out and out winger and the first attacking name linked to Tottenham, but now Spurs are being linked to Marcus Rashford of Manchester United and Cody Gakpo of Liverpool.
These are two highly technical left wingers who are great at creating chances and shooting. These are not true wingers who beat their man and progress the ball every play, but they are the kinds of players who can score double digit goals with double digit assists in the Premier League and are proven at the highest level of international football. Rashford is coming off a great season at Barcelona, while Gakpo fixed his ills in 2025/26 at Liverpool with another magnificent showing for the Netherlands.
While nobody would dare compare Rashford and Gakpo to Son Heung-min, the intention of these profiles from a Tottenham perspective seems pretty clear. Spurs lost a lot of goals and assists from Son year over year when he went to MLS, and they were nowhere close to replacing them with no real goal or assist output on the wings last season.
Spurs need difference makers in the Premier League who can contribute to goals. They can never find someone like Son in a hundred years, but they can find players who can score goals and assists, as even an aging Son was still able to impact games. With the targets they have right now, Spurs are setting the intention that this is what they need to do in the summer.
