Tottenham Hotspur left winger Mathys Tel joined the club permanently in the summer 2025 transfer window for significantly less than expected, as Spurs were able to successfully renegotiate a permanent deal after his succesful loan spell from Bayern Munich for six months, bringing down the option to buy clause fee from 60 million euros to 40 million euros.

And although Tel got jerked around a lot in and out of the starting lineup, he still played a key role for Spurs, scoring crucial goals and keeping everyone's heads up as the loan real attacking threat and take on guy in the Premier League relegation battle, especially after Mohammed Kudus suffered a season ending injury.

Tel has been fully committed to Tottenham, and he only thought about a loan transfer in the winter because he was understandably frustrated with manager Thomas Frank not even bothering to utilize him properly - or play him at all despite Tel being much better than the other options.

The Mathys Tel suitors are lining up

Now, John Cross of the Daily Mirror reports that Tottenham Hotspur have something to worry about this summer, because the highly talented young forward is generating a lot of interest around European football. Cross does not say specifically or how many clubs are interested, but based on other reporting in the English media, Spurs fans can read between the lines and see that other English clubs are feeling out how available Mathys Tel might be this summer.

Tel is far from the perfect player. He is still young and growing, and he can often cause issues by trying to do too much and does need to wise up his passing and chance creation. But his skill, technical ability, attitude, positivity, and willingness to create scoring opportunities have been very important to Tottenham and are assets this club is very much missing in the attack, particularly down the flanks.

Tottenham would not get fair value out of a sale for Tel, and they have to be very worried about other big clubs lurking for Tel, especially ambitious clubs who can offer Tel both a starting position and European football.

Particularly after adding a strong manager in Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham themselves can say that they have plenty to offer Tel, too, despite finishing a measly 17th in the Premier League last season. But they need to make sure they keep proving it to Tel, because it may not be as easy to keep him as everyone assumed.
