Tottenham Hotspur supporters watched Pedro Porro dominate the 2026 World Cup as the best player in his position during the tournament. He was locking down the entire Spanish right flank and making Luis de la Fuente look a bit foolish for even rolling with Marcos Llorente as the starter in the first match against Cape Verde.
But Spurs have yet to see that world class version of Porro, who had Real Madrid and Manchester City back interested in his services this past summer transfer window. It has been frustrating for Spurs to see Porro start the season with so many fitness issues, and while Roberto De Zerbi and the club anticipated this after such a grueling World Cup and have done an amazing job of managing his minutes, they still can't seem to get Porro healthy.
Pedro Porro missed a couple of recent matches but was able to return this weekend for the massive fixture against Aston Villa after suffering what was termed as a knock that was not serious. But then, just 18 minutes into the match, Porro went down once more, leaving the field and then dooming Tottenham to go behind 3-0 in a match they eventually lost 3-2 to continue another winless streak.
Pedro Porro may have a hamstring injury
After the game, Roberto De Zerbi informed reporters, via Hotspur Lane, “I said after the World Cup, I said the management of Pedro should be different, because after the World Cup, many games. I don't know what the problem is. It's a hamstring, I think. Hopefully, it's not a big problem.”
While De Zerbi is hopeful that it isn't a big problem and didn't say it was a big problem, that positive bit of news isn't actually all that positive for Tottenham. Because the big issue is that these soft tissue issues, especially hamstring injuries, are prone to relapse and aggravation, and this could be something that, pardon the pun, hamstrings Porro throughout the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Tottenham Hotspur do not have a single backup right back, and fans have already seen the talented Archie Gray flounder in this position. Spurs can't afford Porro to keep going down, and even though De Zerbi is clearly taking his fitness seriously and knows to expect a slow start after the World Cup, the fact that Spurs can't manage this without Porro continually leaving the lineup is a very worrisome sign indeed. Hopefully, this isn't the start of a nightmare season for the World Cup hero.
