So much of what Tottenham Hotspur are able to do in the summer 2026 transfer window when it comes to holding on to key players and fortifying their squad hinges on whether or not they are able to stay up in the Premier League this season.
Even though that destiny has yet to be written, Spurs as an organization cannot go into the summer window without already planning on who they may decide to go after. There are a lot of problems in this team, as Tottenham did not end up in 18th in the league right now because of just one or two issues plaguing them.
It seems like Spurs do want to keep adding quality to their midfield. According to a report from Alex Crook of talkSPORT, Liverpool center midfielder Curtis Jones, who has been heavily linked to Tottenham in the past, is getting more and more frustrated with his lack of game time. Jones is now seriously considering leaving the Reds, per Crook, and Tottenham are interested if, alas, they can avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Tottenham are still after Curtis Jones
But Jones isn't the only notable young center midfielder at a top Premier League club who is piquing Spurs interest. According to burgeoning Spurs insider @szyexcl, Spurs are interested in not only Jones, but they are also interested in signing Manchester City box to box midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Again, the links to Curtis Jones are nothing new, and Tottenham Hotspur fans would have wished that Liverpool were willing to sell Jones in the winter so that the Lilywhites could have bagged him instead of the far inferior Conor Gallagher.
Nico Gonzalez, though, is a new name Tottenham are considering. The Spanish international is only 24 years old but has already started 15 games this season in the middle of the park for Manchester City, the actual best team in the Premier League right now (with two recent wins over Arsenal to prove it).
Gonzalez is playing at an incredibly high level defensively and is as good of a ball winner as Joao Palhinha despite getting a fraction of the credit. He is also a much smarter and technical deep lying midfielder than Palhinha in terms of how he plays the game tactically, and Gonzalez is adept at maintaining possession and keeping control of games, which is something Spurs very much struggle with.
Jones and Gonzalez would be sensible signings for Tottenham at the right price, as they are young, technical, and ascending players with some dynamism. And they are better than what Spurs have. It's just hard to see them wanting to join a club that would be a step down right now, particularly Gonzalez moving from mighty Man City.
