Tottenham are about to make a signing Daniel Levy would never have approved

Against all expectations, Tottenham Hotspur managed to successfully depose Daniel Levy as the Chairman and CEO of the club last season at the end of the summer transfer window, and while Levy did manage to score two big stars in Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus, he let some other big fish get away, namely current Manchester City star Rayan Cherki.

There were a lot of other players like Morgan Gibbs-White, Marc Guehi, and Bryan Mbeumo who could have significantlly helped Spurs but were not signed because Levy did not want to get into bidding wars with other elite clubs in Europe - the sort of clubs an organization with Spurs fan support and income should be matching up with. And he had far worse gaffes on the transfer market in past years, too. We all remember the sting of not signing Desire Doue.

Levy is gone, and now with the charismatic and ambitious Roberto De Zerbi managing the club, Tottenham Hotspur are trying to shatter their perception. They already splurged 60 million euros on Jan Paul van Hecke with one year left on his deal, making the sort of move Levy avoided with Guehi in 2025. And De Zerbi is now pushing to sign both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for 85 million pounds apiece to overhaul his struggling midfield.

Tottenham are going hard for Mateus Fernandes

Well, according to Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport, Tottenham are pushing even harder for Fernandes, and with all the journalists and transfer insiders reporting that a deal is either accelerated or even close to being signed, the Fernandes splash feels real at this point.

Signing a 21 year old defensive midfielder who broke out for a rival you just relegated from the Premier League for 80-85 million pounds when the mighty and rich Manchester United do not want him is a bold, bold move, and it is the sort of move Daniel Levy would have rather cut off his left ear than make.

But Tottenham are trying to prove to Roberto De Zerbi and their fans that they are a new Tottenham, and, really, they have to be, because the money lost by finishing 17th in the Premire League for two straight seasons is much, much more than the opportunity cost of spending 80 million pounds on Mateus Fernandes - a player good enough to be linked to Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid - or 30 million pounds on a random 29 year old with no future resale value who is barely good enough to be a backup for a mid table Premier League club.
