He might be the only shot.

Tottenham Hotspur are going to have to fire Thomas Frank. Everyone seems to be out on the manager as the right man to lead the way, and the fans have already fully turned on him weeks ago before making their voices louder than ever before after an embarrassing 2-1 loss to West Ham United at home in the Premier League.

Frank has not made Spurs any better from their 17th placed finish under Ange Postecoglou last season, and, if anything, Tottenham look even worse. They play like cowards and lose repeatedly, playing as if they are a small, low budget club.

Spurs supporters have been dreaming of recently fired Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso as the ideal replacement for Frank, as the former Premier League midfielder was once undefeated as a Bundesliga title winner with Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso is off the table for Tottenham

However, Alonso may be impossible. It has nothing to do with Tottenham not being good enough for him or anything like that, but, rather, Alonso may want a few months off to think about the offers on the table and coach in the 2026/27 season after all that he went through in the dysfunctional echo chamber that is Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur may not be able to hire Alonso this winter, but they could swiftly replace Thomas Frank with another member of La Liga royalty, a legendary midfielder from Real's bitter rivals FC Barcelona who most recently coached the Blaugrana back to relevancy.

Yes, perhaps hearing the cries of many Tottenham supporters who have wanted the club to consider him for months, Martin Lipton and Tom Barclay of The Sun report that with Frank indeed on the brink of the sack at Spurs, the club are looking into former Barcelona midfielder and manager Xavi as one of the potential replacements.

Of course, a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino is also on the table, but many Tottenham fans seem to prefer trying out Xavi than rather going with a retread. Sequels almost never work out, and Poch has not been successful since his Tottenham days. Spurs probably should not have fired him at that time, but that ship has sailed.

Meanwhile, Xavi had his flaws at Barca and lost the locker room, but he won't have egos like Robert Lewandowski to deal with at Tottenham. And he will have learned from his mistakes in Catalunya. Meanwhile, he did a lot of good things there, certainly more than what Frank has done in North London, taking a side Ronald Koeman buried into the ground that was in financial shambles and turning it into a title winner.
