Tottneham Hotspur star center back Cristian Romero had an excellent World Cup even though Argentina fell short in the final against the Spanish juggernaut and Romero was subbed off early with a possible injury, and that has made Spurs fans optimistic that they can get a lot more out of the defender than they would have last year when Atletico Madrid were pushing to sign him.
Romero is one of the top center backs in the Premier League but is coming off a poor season, and Roberto De Zerbi could not have been impressed with his attitude after he tried to leave the club for Argentina on Matchday 38 with relegation on the line.
So far, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Inter Milan are the main clubs interested in Romero, and while most people assumed he would be headed to La Liga, it looks like the reigning Serie A champions are the most interested in him.
Cristian Romero could go for less than expected
According to Italian transfer reporter Gianluigi Longari, there have already been "direct contacts" between Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur for Cristian Romero with "total openness" from the player to joining the Nerazzurri. But the worrisome part for Spurs is that Inter are apparently confident they can sign the central defender for just 40 million euros.
As ambitious as 80 million euros would be for Romero, that is the figure many Tottenham fans were hoping to get for Romero, which seems unrealistic now. But 60 million euros appeared to be reasonable, given Spurs spent this much on Jan Paul van Hecke, who had just one year left on his contract at the time of his transfer from Brighton to Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs.
So Romero going for significantly less than Van Hecke when he is a more touted player, though two years older, would be a brutal bit of news for the Tottenham faithful. Tottenham still have other big players to sell this summer transfer window, sure, but Romero was always going to be their most sellable asset in terms of his return.
If Spurs only get 40 million euros out of Romero, that impacts the number of top attackers and the quality of players they can bring in, even with the club more willing to spend for De Zerbi than other managers. Tottenham fans will hope this news is not true and that Inter and other clubs are willing to offer more than this.
