The Luka Vuskovic mistake nobody wants Tottenham to make

Tottenham Hotspur star center back Luka Vuskovic had a rookie season for the ages in the Bundesliga, soaking up honors on a near weekly basis while showing a level of footballing intelligence well beyond that of a teenager in a position where young players normally struggle.

The Hamburg standout became a beloved figure at the historic Bundesliga side quite rapidly, playing a critical role in their rather comfortable survival upon their return to the German top flight, to the point where Hamburg were further away from relegation than Tottenham themselves.

As Tottenham head into a fresh summer transfer window after surviving a tense Premier League relegation fight, the rumors about Luka Vuskovic continue to circulate. Bayern Munich and Barcelona have been linked to him, and Vuskovic himself has always expressed a yearning to play in Hamburg for one more season with his brother, who was suspended for the last season.

Tottenham cannot undersell Luka Vuskovic

But as clubs circle for the chance at Vuskovic, even for another year on loan, Tottenham Hotspur fans want to see their club do the right thing and stand firm. Captain Cristian Romero's departure is almost taken for granted, especially after his antics on the last Matchday when fan pressure forced him to stay in North London for the final game of the season against Everton.

If Romero goes, Tottenham need Luka Vuskovic to replace him in the starting lineup. Micky van de Ven does not seem to be a flight risk anymore, but Tottenham suddenly don't look as strong at the center back position if Romero leaves and Vuskovic is not the one to replace him as the starter next to Van de Ven, especially since, good as he is, Kevin Danso is best as that third center back.

Tottenham are set to bring in Marcos Senesi to replace Romero, but he's only a depth replacement, insofar as he is a better veteran backup than Radu Dragusin. But what Tottenham need is Vuskovic, a dynamic future superstar who is already to be a key player for a team that was 17th in the Premier League and barely escaped relegation.

Spurs need to be bold, and they need to be brave. They have a player in Vuskovic who was one of the best in the entire Bundesliga, the league of Ballon d'Or favorites Michael Olise and Spurs legend Harry Kane. They have one of the best center backs in Europe, a man not so crazily referred to as a Sergio Ramos regen last summer. You don't loan those guys out. You do whatever you can to convince them they are important to your project, and you prove it by playing them.
