Tottenham Hotspur winger Mikey Moore is one of the biggest gems at the club, and whlie he would like to try to play for the first team this season and there is an opening for another winger, it has become quite clear that the best move for the 2025/26 Rangers standout is another loan to a more competitive league.
So far in the preseason, Moore hasn't really distinguished himself or given Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi any reason to believe in him has a first team player. He has not been bad, but he has been, well, quite ordinary. And although he had a great attitude at Rangers in a successful loan spell with big match performances against Celtic, he wasn't lighting the league on fire, which is what you would wanwt to see if a player is ready to be a factor for Tottenham on the wings in the Premier League Big Six discussion.
Right now, there are a few loan destinations being discussed for Moore, and one of them is Middlesborough in the EFL Championship, which is where Tottenham Hotspur recently sold promising striker Will Lankshear.
Mikey Moore needs a top flight challenge
Middlesborough are an easy, known commodity, and while the Championship is not a bad level for Moore, it isn't much of a step up from playing for Rangers; it's a lateral move, to be quite honest. And while the prospect of Moore and Lankshear, whom Spurs still have a right of first refusal offer on, is tantalizing, it's also pretty meaningless.
Loaning Mikey Moore to Middlesborough in the second tier is the easy way out, but the better solution is finding and researching the best landing spot for Moore's profile abroad. FC Koln and Hamburg have been linked in the Bundesliga, but while Hamburg were a great fit for Luka Vuskovic because of their back three and how they played defensively, that may not be the case for a winger like Moore when Hamburg play with wide midfielders/wing backs, such as Miro Muheim on the left.
Meanwhile, Tottenham could, for example, have more success loaning Moore to somwhere like Koln, where there is likely to be a tailor made opening for Moore on the wings once Said El Mala is sold, presumably to Koln's Bundesliga fan friendship club Borussia Dortmund.
Tottenham did a great job of scouting out Luka Vuskovic's loan to Hamburg, and, likewise, Moore needs a club in one of Europe's top five and a similar destination that suits his playing style. Maybe it's Koln, but for sure Middlesborough is not the right spot for his next step. He needs a top flight challenge.
