Last year even before the season ended with everything to play for in the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur watched Cristian Romero openly talk about leaving Spurs for a big club in La Liga. And though he won the Europa League Player of the Season, the rumors continued, and Spurs had to convince Romero to stay with Thomas Frank replacing Ange Postecoglou as the new manager, dangling the captaincy after Son Heung-min's departure to MLS as a sweetener.

While Romero has been valuable on the pitch as one of the better center backs in the Premier League, the idea that he is one of the best in the world or remotely world class has been challenged by the sheer number of players in the league who have outperformed him this season, including lesser names, as well as his poor performances and lack of effort in the most important matches of the relegation fight.

Romero's legacy is now that he was a weak captain and one of the worst in the club's history in their worst ever season, dogged it down the stretch, made more headlines for bad tackles than goal saving ones, and then abandoned his team on the final game of the season by traveling to Argentina to watch a random game of his childhood club instead of supporting his teammates (as another injured defender, Ben Davies is doing) against Everton with the season on the line.

Cristian Romero is being enabled

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham did not mince words about Cristian Romero's awful decision, but he also astutely pointed out that the club's leadership is the real problem for even allowing this situation to happen in the first place.

The legendary English goal scorer said of the Spurs center half, via The Spurs Watch, “The biggest game in the history of the club. This is going to be one nervy game and when your captain is not there that does not set a good example for everyone. That is naughty, that is loose from whoever is letting him do what he wants to do. How does he even go about that? Is it ok if I go back to Argentina because my boyhood club are playing in an important game...what? Don't even ask the question! No! I need you alongside your teammates in the dressing room to give them some support. I can't believe he's asked the question, I can't believe he's been allowed to go. That sets a precedent that does.”

Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham have been even weaker leaders than Romero as the Tottenham captain, as this executive pairing has been spineless in the face of terrible calls against the club while being even more pathetically weak in the January transfer window. They sat on Thomas Frank for months, have let Randal Kolo Muani not care for months instead of cutting him loose in January, and have turned Spurs into a laughing stock. their enabling of Romero, who should be stripped of the captaincy and banished from the club this summer, is yet another example of their poor leadership.
