Former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is one of the most respected players in the history of the Premier League and arguably the GOAT of English midfielders, and he has great, even keeled insight that Tottenham Hotspur fans would do well to listen to, even if he is not one of their own.
And the former Rangers and Aston Villa manager recently offered a scathing critique of Spurs that is difficult to argue after their 3-2 loss to Villa over the final Premier League weekend before the September international break, which has now confirmed Spurs as the worst team in the entire league through the first five Matchdays.
Gerrard says that he looks at the Tottenham squad and does not see a single world class player who gives opponents reason to be afraid. He told fans on the TNT Sports broadcast, via Arabic Spurs, "Tottenham have signed players of good quality, but I don't see a world-class star. If you play against them as a player or as a manager, I think stopping them is possible... I don't see a player who scares me."
Tottenham's new signings aren't impressing enough
There are a few players on Tottenham Hotspur who will take umbrage with this quote from the great Steven Gerrard and should see it as motivation to step up. Holdovers from last season like Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, and even Mohammed Kudus will all fancy themselves as world class, especially Porro after he was the best player in his position at the 2026 World Cup for champions Spain.
But Gerrard most specifically went after the new signings at the beginning of his statement, and the most expensive of those signings was Roberto De Zerbi's golden boy midfielder from Brescia, former Newcastle United and AC Milan man Sandro Tonali.
The Italian midfielder won the Scudetto and was crucial in leading the Rossoneri back to the promised land, but while Tonali has played well defensively in recent weeks, he has not remotely looked like a 100 million pound player on the ball or creatively in the opening weeks of the 2026/27 campaign.
Tonali has been closer to decent and nowhere near great, and Tottenham signed him to be the new superstar of this team, otherwise he would be worth nothing close to 100 million pounds. Gerrard, a fellow Premier League midfielder, just gave Tonali a lot more motivation to prove that he is that guy and stands out as a star who can scare opponents when his name is in the 11.
