Tottenham Hotspur are moving the ball up the pitch a lot better under Roberto De Zerbi in the 2026/27 season, and side from the matches against Brentford and Aston Villa in which they surrendered three goals, they have looked better defensively, too, even with star fullbacks Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro struggling with fitness issues.
But Spurs, despite their signs of progress on the pitch in terms of shooting attempts and possession, still have not won a game under De Zerbi this season. They have nothing to show for their positive spells, and now that they are sitting 20th in the Premier League, there are real concerns about how much progress the team has actually made.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard isn't mincing words when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur right now and what they are missing, and any Spurs fan watching this team will agree with the former Premier League center midfielder's assertion that the Lilywhites need someone who can actually score the goals - and it's honestly what Spurs fans have been clamoring for a long time since Harry Kane left.
Dominic Solanke is not the answer Tottenham hoped for
Gerrard said on the TNT Sports broadcast, via Chris Cowlin, "I think Spurs have improved in certain areas, but they've not got a poacher. They've not got a goalscorer. They've got some exciting players in the front line, but who is going to get you 20 goals?'"
Tottenham Hotspur spent a record 65 million pounds on Dominic Solanke in 2024 after losing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, and while Big Dom scored 19 goals in a record 2023/24 Premier League season for Bournemouth, he has come nowhere close to that mark at Tottenham and has been particularly woeful when Roberto De Zerbi has called his name this season.
While some Spurs fans are miffed at De Zerbi's feud with Richarlison and his decision to keep the Brazilian international off the official squad, it's not like he was any sort of real solution for Spurs either. When compared to the top teams in the Premier League and where Spurs want to be in the table, their goal scoring situation is nowhere near where it needs to be.
The only possible goal scorer Tottenham signed this past summer transfer window was Omar Marmoush, and he is not the sort of poaching goal scorer than Steven Gerrard is talking about, which has been observed this season. Spurs need better, and without someone who can punch the ball into the back of the net, they are going to keep struggling to close games for wins.
