Earlier on today, Thomas Tuchel announced his first squad as England manager, ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Albania on the 21st of March, and Latvia on the 24th of March, with both games taking place at Wembley.
The squad includes Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke, who has been picked for three squads in a row now, having not been called up for seven years. After his two assists in the win over AZ Alkmaar last night, it has been a very good couple of days for him.
Sadly, he will not be joined by any of his club team mates. To the surprise of many, both Djed Spence and James Maddison have not been included in this squad.
Spurs pair Djed Spence and James Maddison snubbed from England squad
Let's start with Spence, and look at the other options in the squad. At left-back, he has selected Myles Lewis-Skelly - a midfielder who has played at left-back this season. He is the only player in the squad who has actually played at left-back this season.
Other players in the squad who have played there before are Levi Colwill, and first time inclusion Dan Burn. Both players are left footed, and have again played there before, but have generally played as central defenders - their natural position - this season.
So, it feels very harsh on Spence, who has been excellent there for a sustained period of time this season. From a selfish point of view, it is good that he will be getting two weeks of rest, but you just hope he doesn't let his head drop after a result of this very harsh exclusion.
Then, there is the omission of Maddison. There is strong competition in the attacking midfield spots. Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers are having top seasons. Cole Palmer has had a big drop in form in 2025, but you can understand that pick given how good a player he is.
Beyond that, however? Eberechi Eze - has he really been better than Maddison? Not sure at all. Even Phil Foden - some may use the same logic as used for Palmer above, but not as convinced. He can feel fortunate. It particularly feels surprising as it was reported that Tuchel is a big fan of the midfielder, and tried to sign him during his time at Chelsea.
Again, selfishly it is good that he will get some rest ahead of crucial Europa League ties against Eintracht Frankfurt. Still, the human element does come into your thinking too, and we know how much playing for England means to Maddison. He will be really gutted at this.
When all three of Spence, Maddison, and Solanke were heavily involved in the winner last night, you hoped that it would have been coupled with a call up to celebrate today. Have to feel for both of the first two.
The rest of the squad is pretty awful, but that is another debate that also includes plenty of non Spurs players, so no need to go into that here. Head up lads.
