Now that Tottenham Hotspur are close to solving the question of their manager situation by replacing Ange Postecoglou with Thomas Frank, the next big issue will be resolving the questions around the future of club legend Son Heung-min.

The South Korean superstar stumbled to the finish line in the 2024/25 season with a foot injury but did hoist the Europa League trophy at the end of the campaign after returning from the ailment. Son still tied Tottenham for the team lead in goal contributions even in a down year.

However, Son has just one year left on his contract, and while most Tottenham fans don't want to lose the captain with Champions League football ahead, it's possible Son sees the Europa League win and Postecoglou's firing as a natural exit point for himself. On top of that, Daniel Levy could see this as a final chance to cash-in on Sonny with clubs like Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia still circling.

Son Heung-min doesn't fully control his Tottenham future

Usually when he's asked questions about his future at Tottenham, Son gives unequivocal answers stating that he's 100 percent staying with Spurs and is only focused on helping the team. But in a recent press conference, via South Korean news outlet Yonhap News, Son sung a different tune and left the door open to the possibility of him finally exiting his beloved Spurs this summer:

"I still have one more year left on the contract. Rather than saying anything at this moment, I think we should all wait and see what happens. But no matter where I end up, I will always do the best I can. It will never change."

The quote itself seems less like a statement from Son saying that he's exploring other options, but rather it seems like a reflection of the reality of the uncertainty of the entire situation for the 32-year-old. Tottenham are undergoing significant changes, again, with a new manager and a potentially new ownership structure, but Son isn't in the prime of his career anymore.

It's an admission that the future isn't in Son's hands anymore, and that if Tottenham have a different vision of the future for the South Korean legend, then perhaps the Spurs captain won't fight it and will move to a new chapter in his career. If he's wanted, Son will obviously stay and fight for the badge. If not, he may part ways amicably and do his best at, say, Al-Hilal. Football is a sad business, as we saw with what happened to Big Ange.
