Tottenham Hotspur supporters will always have the utmost love and respect for Son Heung-min, who has a strong case for being the greatest legend in the history of the club. There may have been even better individual players, such as teammate Harry kane, but Son means something special to the club, which was sealed by him being a key part of the team that hoisted the first European trophy in more than 40 years during the 2024/25 season.

That proved to be Son's send off campaign, and while Tottenham fans had come to grips with the fitting farewell on top and departure to MLS, where he has teamed up wtih another Spurs icon in goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, there were some fans who started having regrets during the season.

While Son was tearing it up with great goals and gaudy assist totals in the United States, the Tottenham Hotspur front line was ravaged by injuries and woeful, with new addition Randal Kolo Muani failing to even follow in the footsteps of Randal Kolo Muani.

Son Heung-min is still better than what Tottenham have

There was naturally great interest in watching Son Heung-min suit up on the world stage during the first day of 2026 World Cup action against Czechia, and the South Korean legend had some bright moments, nearly scoring on a couple of occasions.

But in the end, Son fluffed his lines and was unable to be the difference on his six shots. He drew fouls and was dangerous, but his end product and ability to bring others into the game as the center forward was lacking. In this way, Son reminded Tottenham fans why the club were not desperate to retain him and allowed him to leave with his head held high, perhaps because, as fans have to admit, the signs of the decline were there. And even in this World Cup game, Son did not finish the outing, looking leggy by the second half.

Yet at the same time, though Son showed his age, he was still a present threat and made brilliant moves off the ball. He also showed an ability to create shots for himself. And that is much more than can be said for the current crop of Tottenham strikers. Randal Kolo Muani was comically poor, but Dominic Solanke and Richarlison were mediocre as well - and neither can say they are a better player than Son.

That is the harsh realization Tottenham must acknowledge. Son is a shell of the player he was, but he's still decent and much better than Spurs current options. Watching Son work hard, even in falling short, was a reminder that while Spurs needed to upgrade, they, in fact, did not upgrade at all last summer. And that is what they must change in 2026.
