Tottenham Hotspur center midfielder Lucas Bergvall is not at all happy with his expected role at the club, and he has submitted a formal transfer request to the organization after their strong interest in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali surfaced. And now that Spurs have signed both players for a combined 185 million pounds, it sure feels like the Swedish international's days may be numbered.
And with Sweden out of the World Cup, Bergvall can now focus on his transfer wishes. Although Tottenham have told Bergvall that they still count on him in the squad and have no plans of wanting to sell him, clubs like Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are already lining up with ambitions to sign the 20 year old as a starter, even though he really proved Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs right with a terrible World Cup for Sweden.
According to a new report from Amar Mehta of Sky Sports News, despite De Zerbi and sporting director Johan Lange talking to Lucas Bergvall personally and informing him that they do not want to sell the player this summer transfer window, the center midfielder still wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur so he can start every week in his preferred position as a No. 8.
Lucas Bergvall still wants out
Thomas Frank not utilizing Bergvall properly has really done a number on the young player's confidence and overall outlook on Spurs. Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali will curtail his playing time, yes, but they are also better players right now and do not even play the same role, which means Bergvall should probably be trying to stick in and fight more, especially with both the coach and sporting director trying to back his stay.
Tottenham are now in an uncomfortable position with Bergvall, but after the Luka Vuskovic sale for 50 million pounds to Brighton, it is a situation that Spurs supporters saw coming from a mile away. The club still has work to do when it comes to backing the big young talents, and all the struggles of the nightmare 2025/26 season have not been forgotten quickly by those at the club, even as players like Tonali and Fernandes are very excited to join forces with Roberto De Zerbi at N17.
Nottingham Forest are going to see that Bergvall still wants to leave as an opening to offer a similar deal to what Spurs sold Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for, and that will only increase the internal fears from Spurs supporters.
