Tottenham need a lot more attacking firepower if they want to truly compete with the top five in the Premier League and the best clubs in the Champions League next season. No player on their team had 10 assists and only Brennan Johnson had 10 goals in the Premier League, which was part of the reason why Spurs finished 17th in the league.
This summer, Tottenham are going to have to add reinforcements to their attack, even a season after spending 65 million pounds to sign striker Dominic Solanke, who did at least somewhat live up to his billing in the big Europa League games.
A striker and a winger could be coming in next season for Spurs, and the North London giants are already looking to bring one of the biggest names in European football back to the Premier League in Bayern Munich right winger Leroy Sane.
Tottenham have serious interest in Leroy Sane
Likely to leave the Bavarians this summer as a free agent with negotiations dwindling, Tottenham have suddenly become one of the big favorites to sign Sane, who will command huge wages and a bonus but no transfer fee.
According to a report from BILD's Christian Falk, Spurs have a "concrete" interest in Sane, whose agent Pini Zahavi holds a close relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. Problematically, though, Falk reports that if Spurs do sign Sane as a free agent, they are unlikely to try to sign Mathys Tel permanently after all.
Since Tel is a young left winger and Sane is a 29-year-old right winger who played in the midfield a few seasons ago under Julian Nagelsmann, the signing of one should not necessarily rule out the other. But it seems like it could, and if that is the case and Levy is only going to take one player, signing Sane could be a bad move for Tottenham.
At a discounted rate, Tel could cost 30-40 million pounds, which is a great price for a 20-year-old forward who has superstar potential. Tottenham need to keep prioritizing these kinds of players for their club, and maybe most importantly of all, Tel has shown on and off the pitch that he very much wants to be a part of Tottenham's future. You can't put a price on that.
Sane may be free, but if he costs in the neighborhood of 20 million euros in wages (he currently makes a whopping 15 million at Bayern), he may not be cheaper than Tel in the long run when you factor in bonuses. And at 29, not only does Sane have no resale value, but he could become very hard to move, besides the Saudi Pro League, within just a year or two of a fat contract.
There's also the matter that Sane was closer to "good" than "great" last season and is already declining for a Bayern side that is no longer a powerhouse in the Champions League. Sane wasn't a regular starter for Bayern last season and had 11 goals and 5 assists, the same number of goal contributions as Son Heung-min in an off year in the Premier League.
Sane is a good footballer and could have probably performed better last season for Bayern if given more starts by VIncent Kompany, but, to be fair, where was he going to start when Michael Olise was clearly twice the right winger that he was? Tottenham's interest in Sane isn't unwise, but it would be unwise to prioritize a declining veteran winger over a potential next big thing who also happens to love your club.
