It was only an appearance off the bench for Tottenham Hotspur against a team outside the Premier League in the Second Round of the League Cup, but Savio's debut performance for the Lilywhites could not have gone any better, with the Brazilian international firing everyone up with a goal and an assist in a lively performance.
Savio was clinical and bubbly, take defenders on and showing the efficiency in the final third that he always had at Girona when he was a sneaky La Liga Player of the Season candidate against the likes of Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
Roberto De Zerbi admitted that Savio still needs to improve his end product, particularly in terms of scoring goals from the wings, in order to reach that next level and fulfill his potential - and, yes, price tag - at Spurs, but it did not take him long to make that sort of an impact for the team.
Tottenham need Savio to keep scoring and assisting
Now, Tottenham Hotspur will obviously face tougher tests than Charlton, but after losing 3-0 to local rivals Brentford in their 2026/27 Premier League season opener, Savio coming in off the bench to put an exclamation mark on a 5-1 win over Charlton with two goal contributions was certainly a statement of intent - and a big bounce back for Spurs as a whole.
Tottenham need Savio to get goals and assists, and if he can get into the double digits in both, that would be beyond a dream for a Spurs side that got close to absolutely nothing in terms of goal contributions out wide in the 2025/26 season - and did not get too much out of those positions in the 2024/25 season either despite having both Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski in the squad.
Savio is a different beast with his explosiveness and electricity on the ball, and as Roberto De Zerbi already admitted to the press, the former Manchester City man is one of the best in the world at taking defenders on one on one.
Spurs are going to need to see the full gamut of his capabilities unleashed this season, in addition to the goals and assists he just showed he can bring to the table against Charlton. Savio is already telling De Zerbi with his actions that he can be decisive for this team, even in a limited opportunity on his debut, and fans will be excited to see what he can cook against Newcastle in the Premier League.
