Tottenham Hotspur spent 85 million pounds in order to finally sign Savio from Manchester City, and while that price tag is partially inflated by the fact that he came as a package deal with Omar Marmoush, who was sold for slightly less officially so that Man City could get away with paying back Eintracht Frankfurt a lower sell on clause, don't tell that to the Premier League pundits who are slagging off this deal just as readily as they did the Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes midfield signings.
Never mind the fact that Savio is an explosive athlete with a lot of skill who is only 22, once had nearly 20 goal contributions in a La Liga season for Girona as a Player of the Season contender who briefly fought for the title against a nearly undefeatable Real Madrid in 2023/24, and was vastly underutilized by Manchester City.
Savio is about to prove a lot of people who overly focused on his goals and assists at Man City, without even acknowledging how good he was at impacting games before that in a tougher league to score, very wrong indeed.
Savio has become underrated
Manchester City barely even cared about playing Savio and left him as an afterthought, and that was a huge reason why he was so desperate to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer transfer window. Spurs were actually trying hard to sign him for a year before Man City finally gave in.
In his first game off the bench against Charlton Athletic in the League Cup, Savio scored and assisted off the bench, showing his explosiveness and the end product that Manchester City did not think he had. And while people will try to downplay. that performance by pointing out that it came against second rate competition in Charlton, it is important to note that most new signings don't adapt so quickly that they are generating goals off the bench immediately.
Savio is a special player. He would put defenders on skates and blow by them as a mere teenager at Girona, and he was doing that for Manchester City, too, when he did play, including off the bench in big Champions League games against clubs like Real Madrid. So while outlets like The Athletic may not rate Savio highly among summer signings, Tottenham know better than to listen what the outsiders say and to trust the tape, trust the quality of the player, and trust the process.
