Savinho's ideal role at Tottenham makes another area of need more crucial

Tottenham Hotspur are getting closer and closer to signing Savinho from Manchester City, and after Xavi Simons posted a photo of the two together on social media, Spurs fans are buzzing with the feeling that a deal could be imminent.

Spurs tried to sign Savinho last summer from Man City, but Pep Guaridola and the Citizens were afraid of losing a quality player for the future and immediate depth on the wings. After the addition of Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo in the winter, Man City had even less room for Savinho, and, now, they are more open to selling in 2026 with a new regime in charge.

Tottenham have been, by far, the most interested club dating back to last year, and this looks like a 50 million pound blockbuster signing that actually has a chance of happening for Spurs - and the fans have been waiting for this kind of a potential superstar signing from an elite club for a while.

Tottenham need an actual scorer

When Savinho arrives at N17, he will be able to start on either the left or right flank as a left footer, but the best area for him to play is as a traditional winger so that Mohammed Kudus, who is also left footed, can stay on the right. Kudus is always more comfortable on the right, dating back to his days at West Ham United, and Spurs will still dream of Dejan Kulusevski returning from his nasty knee injury to be the left footed backup right winger.

But Tottenham need a new left winger to spell Mathys Tel, who is a goal threat and inverts on his right foot to shoot. The problem is that Spurs lack space with a traditional No. 10, either Xavi Simons or James Maddison, starting in the middle of the attack.

Savinho moving over to the left opens up a lot of space for Simons and the others, but having more of a traditional winger on the left takes away the opportunity for a secondary goal scorer to assist the No. 9. And, well, Tottenham do not even have a primary goal scorer at striker, and one of the reasons why they signed Dominic Solanke two years ago was to have a well rounded creative striker who could help combine with Son Heung-min on the left wing.

Tottenham only had one conceivable scoring threat last season, and that was Richarlison with 11 Premier League goals. Nobody else was even close. And Richarlison is probably going to leave soon if Spurs are able to find a legitimate transfer offer for the striker, who was only the best optin for the team because Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani were so horrible.

By signing Savinho, Tottenham have increasing the ceiling of the entire team with a one on one winger who can beat anyone with quickness and speed, but when you bring in a wide creator like that, it only moves the needle to the maximum if you have a striker who stays in the middle and scores - like what Girona had with Artem Dovbyk and Manchester City have with Erling Haaland. So a real, scoring No. 9 is Spurs next order of business after Savinho.
